URGENT WARNING
Plans For A Massive Industrial Battery Storage Facility
Near Thorntonhall/Busby/Jackton!
We Must Stop This Now!
SAVE OUR COMMUNITY & GREENBELT
The proposed battery storage site threatens to damage our community’s landscape — and pose serious health, safety, and environmental risks.
We cannot afford to ignore this.
Our community’s future is at stake.
The BESS Local Action Group and the Jackton and Thorntonhall Community Council (JTCC) are fighting back against this development because of the dangers it poses — from fire risks and noise to environmental damage and traffic. While we acknowledge the importance of energy infrastructure, we believe this location is completely inappropriate and that safer, more suitable alternative locations should be considered.
We need YOUR help now.
Stand with us to prevent this project from going ahead — before it’s too late.
Together, we can STOP this threat and protect our homes, land, and safety.
The facility scale poses fire hazards, with distant emergency services. A fire could release toxic fumes into the village & surrounding area and pollute waterways.
Local roads, particularly Waterfoot Road & Peel Road, are considered too narrow & will be overwhelmed by heavy construction traffic, destroying our rural landscape.
A persistent humming noise from the facility’s equipment is expected to impact our homes and our daily lives and routine .
The area has been worked as farmland for many years. It is home to many species of birds and animals and we have great concerns.
The first proposal is for a 11.4 acre battery storage facility & the developer hopes to upgrade this to an even bigger storage facility - a massive 86 acre LDES.
This is equivalent to approx 54 football pitches. The site location is considered out of character with the surrounding rural & residential environment of Thorntonhall &
Busby Green Belt.
The project is located on protected greenbelt land. No alternative sites were properly considered. Community engagement has been limited and unclear with information withheld. There are many questions on the fairness and thoroughness of the rushed planning.
There are 2 proposals -
Proposal 1 - Meikle Dripps Farm BESS
The first proposal is for a large scale 150 MW battery energy storage facility (BESS) on a 11.4 acre site, the size of 7 football pitches. The facility will feature approximately 108 large lorry sized metal shipping container units filled with lithium batteries , including 72 Battery Energy Storage (BESS) units and 24 Power Conversion Systems (PCS)
The company Apatura - who are the developers are in the pre application stage. They want to build this battery plant at Meikle Dripps Farm, in the greenbelt land near Thorntonhall, Jackton, and Busby.
Application is planned to go live late summer/ early autumn 25. When the application goes live we only have 28 days to object to the ECU about the plan.
LDES (Long Duration Energy Storage) called Busby
If the developer gets the permission for the 8 acre BESS, they will then approach Ofgem to upgrade to an even bigger site and proceed with the LDES alternative in early 2026.
The LDES will be a MASSIVE 86-acre site almost the size of 54 football pitches.
Approximately half the size of Thorntonhall village —impacting Thorntonhall, Busby and Jackton communities
Founded in spring 2024, the BESS Group opposes the project. We have been working to prevent one of the Scotland's Largest Battery Storage Facilities being built near Thorntonhall/Busby/Jackton, on greenfield farmland and near residential areas.
We’ve have been busy crowdfunding for an independent assessment regarding noise & traffic. We have been raising awareness through flyers and posters, as well as collaborating with the JTCC and regularly update the community.
Please get friends and neighbours to send their email address to the BESS group, so we can keep everyone informed. If you have not already signed signed the petition, please do so now and share the information.
